Two UTPA senior mechanical engineering students won first place in a poster contest at the recent South Texas Environmental Conference 2001 in Corpus Christi. From left are Canuto Martinez; Dr. Ala Qubbaj, mechanical engineering assistant professor; and Adalberto Garza.

Adalberto Garza and Canuto Martinez took top honors for "Combustion Characteristics of a Natural Gas-Propane Hybrid Fuel" during the conference Oct. 24-26. Each received $100 and a certificate.

Dr. Ala Qubbaj, mechanical engineering assistant professor, received the award on the students' behalf from Ralph Marquez, Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission commissioner. Qubbaj supervised and mentored the two students.

"They are two sharp students who have been working hard with me on research, and their poster presentation impressed everybody," Qubbaj said.

"They competed with about 20 other posters that were presented by graduate students, and even though they were the only seniors, they won first place. This shows that our students are receiving a quality and strong education that enables them not only to compete but also outperform their peers at other schools."
