A senior vocal performance student at The University of Texas-Pan American was selected by Operafestival di Roma to perform the role of Marcellina this summer in Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro."
Linda Fuentes was chosen through an international audition to participate in the festival June 26 through July 31 in Rome. During the intensive five-week program, she received coaching in the role and stage movement from Dr. Louisa Panou of the University of Virginia.
Operafestival di Roma, founded by Panou, is in its seventh year of production. This year, the company performed each night before crowds up to 800 people.
In addition to her performances as Marcellina, Fuentes appeared twice in a production of musical theatre scenes, singing "Still" from Titanic and "The One Note Rag" from Wonderful Town.
Fuentes, also a voice instructor at Mr. Music in El Centro Mall, received permission to film the festival and create a documentary for the UTPA Department of Music.
"I am just beginning the editing process for the video," Fuentes said. "I believe this film will help other students recognize what is expected of us as professionals and help them to prepare sufficiently to succeed in attaining their goals."
Fuentes' trip was sponsored in part by the University Women's Board; Luby's Cafeteria; Quips & Quotes; Abundant Grace Community Church; James Kellar Texaco; Robert Weston, general manager of Johnny Carino's; and Debra Case Dance Studio.
