The latest recipients of the Anheuser-Busch Ann LaMantia Endowed Scholarship for outstanding female athletes at The University of Texas-Pan American were recognized at a July 26 luncheon at the International Trade and Technology Building.
"It (this scholarship) is wonderful," said scholarship recipient Adriana Espinoza, a senior graphic design major from Laredo. "It's really helped me out a lot. It's impossible to study, hold down a job and play a sport. I want to thank L&F Distributors for their donation to the school and the scholarship fund."
During the luncheon, Val LaMantia Peisen of L&F Distributors recognized Espinoza and Erin Buttery, senior clinical laboratory science major from Colorado Springs, Colo.
"I think it's great. It's really helpful for the student-athletes," said Buttery, who has played four years for the Lady Broncs basketball team. "I really appreciate it."
This is the second year Espinoza, a member of Lady Broncs golf team, has received this scholarship. She plans to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design in May, along with a teaching certificate.
This is the first year Buttery has been awarded the prestigious scholarship. She plans to graduate in December and work as a medical technician in a hospital.
"This is really strong in our family," said LaMantia about her family's support for women athletes. "I realize that it's hard for athletes to keep up their grades and still be on involved in athletics without support.
"Anheuser-Busch, L&F Distributors and the LaMantia Family are very honored to support this endowment for women athletes at UTPA. The women athletes I have met are exceptional."
