Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez, president of The University of Texas-Pan American will announce preparations for celebrating the University's 75th anniversary Monday, May 21.
A news conference is at 2 p.m. at the UTPA Marialice Shary Shivers Administration Building Board Room. Nevárez will unveil the winning anniversary logo and recognize the winner and finalists of the logo contest. He also will introduce Margaret McAllen as anniversary committee honorary chair and Martha Tevis as director.
McAllen was a founding member of the UTPA Foundation Board of Trustees in 1982 and a member of the Pan American University Board of Regents from 1983-89. She was instrumental in the University's merger with The University of Texas System in 1989.
Tevis, a charter member of the UTPA Alumni Association, came to then-Pan American College in 1967. She has taught in the College of Education in the areas of research, the history and philosophy of education, and cultural foundations of education. She is on the editorial boards of several national journals and is secretary of the International Society for Educational Biography.
The University of Texas-Pan American was established in 1927 as Edinburg College, a two-year community college governed by the Edinburg School District. A major yearlong celebration with various events and activities is scheduled for September 2002 to August 2003.
