The University of Texas-Pan American Dean of Students Office recently sponsored the 11th annual Student Leaders Retreat at the Radisson Resort on South Padre Island.
Forty-nine student leaders from the Student Government Association, University Program Board, Bacchus & Gamma and University Ambassadors, along with resident assistants from the Housing Office, attended the conference, designed to promote leadership skills and building collaborative teams.
TEAM 2002 participants enjoyed an interactive conference featuring sessions on communication skills, conflict resolution, leadership styles, presentational skills, team building, diversity issues, portfolio development, goal setting, event planning and assessment.
Breakout sessions were presented by the Dean of Students Office and invited speakers. The speakers included Dr. John Edwards, vice president for Enrollment and Student Services, on the University's vision and plans; counselor Kim L. Reyes on diversity; Dr. David Sturges, management associate professor, on delivering an effective presentation; and counselor Demmae Gonzalez on leadership styles.
Participants said they gained a lot of insight from the retreat, which will help in setting goals and collaborative projects for the coming year. Proposed projects include a "Welcome Back Broncs Bash" and "Spirit Week."
