Numerous student organizations at The University of Texas-Pan American signed up recently at the Student Union to participate in the first "Walk of Excellence" 5K walk-a-thon May 5 at the new UTPA-Edinburg baseball stadium.

Registration is at 7:30 a.m. May 5 and the race begins at 8 a.m.

MBA Association President Wesley Jennings signs up for the first "Walk of Excellence walk-a-thon during a kickoff celebration at the Student Union Tuesday, April 3. Veronica Zamaron, a work study student at the Development Office, assisted organizations in signing up for the May 5 event at the UTPA-Edinburg baseball stadium.

During the kickoff celebration, club members and officers from the French Club, Sisters Dedicated to the Latin Community, Health and Kinesiology Club and other organizations enjoyed pizza and learned about the opportunity to earn some money.

"Very few organizations know the money is available to them," said Ruben Garcia, event coordinator. "Seventy percent of the Greater University Fund goes to student scholarships, and 30 percent goes to student activities."

It is sponsored by the UTPA Development Office to raise money for the Greater University Fund and promote involvement of student organizations. The goal is to collect at least $30,000.

UTPA has more than 80 active student organizations. Participating clubs will be given information packets and will obtain pledges from students, staff and faculty, the public and local businesses.

Organizations will receive 10 percent of the money they raise as an incentive. The five that raise the most money per capita will receive a cash prize.

Health and Kinesiology Club President Roberta Rodriguez said her organization is excited about the event and helping students.

"Our role is to promote healthy lifestyles, and if we can go out there and walk, then everybody should, too," Rodriguez said. "We are just going to go out there and walk and have a good time."
