The University of Texas-Pan American hosted the 16th annual Rio Grande Valley Border Senior Games March 10-12, the second straight year the University has hosted this event.
The Rio Grande Valley Border Senior Games promotes healthy lifestyles for seniors through education, fitness and sports and offers a variety of events.
Seniors age 50 and older can participate in events ranging from track and field, race-walking, swimming and basketball free throws to dominoes, table tennis shuffleboard and washers.
Participants who place first, second or third qualify for the 2001 Texas State Senior Games in Lubbock this fall. Afterward, some may qualify for the 2001 National Senior Games in Baton Rouge, Lou.
Several UTPA faculty and staff participated in the games, including Dr. Tony De La Pena (biology), Robert Contreras (Learning Assistance Center), Mary Caraveo (Financial Aid), Jeff Getchell (Personnel Services) and Dr. Paul Villas (UT-Border Health Office).
