"This is a very special event in the life of UT Pan American," Nevarez said. "Every spring, we gather to honor you. You have made a mark. You have made a difference. You have succeeded, and I am very proud of you."

Keynote speaker and philosophy associate professor Dr. Kenneth Buckman spoke to students about the meaning of leadership and encouraged them to become great leaders in each of their callings.

"We must call leadership into question; we must direct our attention to leadership that matters," said Buckman, who earlier received the Chancellor's Outstanding Teaching Award. "If we are to be good leaders, our authority must be legitimate ... and fair."

Among those honored were 30 recipients of "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities"; 18 recipients of the Academic Deans' Outstanding Service Award; student leaders from the Student Government Association, University Program Board, Bacchus and Gamma; and editors of "The Pan American" and "Panorama."
