Some golfers came close, but no one took home a million dollars cash by making a hole-in-one Saturday afternoon during the Blockbuster Million Dollar Cash Shootout, part of The University of Texas-Pan American Pan Am Classic golf tournament at Los Lagos Golf Club.
Still, the two-day golf tournament - which included a Three Dog Night concert, junior golf clinic and the Shootout - raised about $125,000, organizers said, the best in event history. Tournament proceeds will go toward UTPA student scholarships through the UTPA Foundation.
Sponsored by Blockbuster, Inc., 50 people had one shot each to win a million dollars by getting an ace on the 150-yard No. 18. An additional $57,000 was available for flags valued at $10,000, $4,000 and $1,000 for balls that missed the million-dollar mark.
Meanwhile, two-man teams in three flights competed for $2,000 in prizes per flight. First-place winners received $1,000, with $600 for second and $400 for third.
Flight winners were:
· First Flight - First, Don Crowe and Kyle Marburger (63-69-132); second, Chris Wicker and Jerry Greenfield (63-71-134); third, Greg Souquette and Larry Contreras (68-69-137).
· Second Flight - First, Roy Martinez and Ruben Garza (75-81-156); second, Ray Stafford and Adrian Arriaga (75-82-157); third, Hector Reyna and Carlos Rodriguez (83-82-165).
· Third Flight - First, Juan Farias and Michael Hernandez (73-67-140); second, Phil McLaird and Scott Taylor (70-73-143); third, Roy Garza and Dustin Garza (71-73-144).
There also was a junior golf clinic Saturday for children ages 6-13. More than 80 young golfers learned from members of the Broncs and Lady Broncs golf teams and received two free tickets to a Broncs baseball game.
