Hundreds of current and prospective students at The University of Texas-Pan American attended the ninth annual Financial Aid Recruitment Fair, Friday, Feb. 23, at the Student Union.

With a theme of "Catch the Wave at UTPA," about 30 beach-dressed staffers assisted an estimated 1,600 students and their parents with the financial aid application process and answered questions on different types of financial aid, including grants, loans, work-study and income tax preparation.

Current and potential future students at The University of Texas-Pan American learned about financial aid opportunities Friday, Feb. 23 during the ninth annual Financial Aid Recruitment Fair at the Student Union. With a theme of "Catch the Wave at UTPA," beach-dressed staffers assisted students and their parents with the financial aid application process and answered questions on different types of financial aid, including grants, loans, work-study and income tax preparation.

High school students from school districts across the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo participated, along with current UTPA students. Jody Pena, Student Outreach Services director, said this is the first time students have attended the fair from outside the Valley.

"This fair not only brings our current students and other students around the Valley here who need financial aid information, but it also helps us recruit students who are interested in the University and have never been here before," Pena said. "It gives them an opportunity to tour the campus."

The Financial Aid Recruitment Fair also included tours, scholarship drawings, lunch and door prizes.

The event was part of Financial Aid Awareness Month, February. Financial aid administrators statewide are encouraging students to apply early for financial aid.
