Thanks to the recent "Book for a Buck" coupon promotion by Blockbuster, Inc. and its local franchise, $20,000 was donated to The University of Texas-Pan American Foundation at its quarterly board meeting Friday, Jan. 19.
The check presentation was made by representatives from the corporate offices of Blockbuster, Inc. and Tejano Entertainment, LTD, the local Blockbuster Video franchise, at the UTPA International Trade and Technology Building.
The local franchise raised $10,000 through the "Book for a Buck" coupon promotion from Nov. 1-Dec. 31 at 23 Blockbuster Video stores throughout the Rio Grande Valley. The corporate office matched the funds for a total contribution of $20,000 to benefit the university.
"We're very grateful for the contribution," said UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez. "This is not the first time Blockbuster has helped the institution, either, as we've had a long history together. It's a good partnership, and this check will further the university's goal of being a regional doctoral/research institution."
Joining Nevárez were Randy McKee, senior vice president for franchising for Blockbuster, Inc. and a member of the UTPA Foundation Board of Trustees; Vanessa Hernandez, marketing coordinator for Tejano Entertainment, LTD; Roland S. Arriola, UTPA vice president for External Affairs; and Roy Martinez, president of the UTPA Foundation Board of Trustees.
"It's always a pleasure to work with UTPA and its people," McKee said. "We consider it a privilege to support UTPA, and we know these funds will be used to further the university's efforts to further educational opportunities in the Valley."
Hernandez echoed McKee's sentiments.
"We're very proud to have come up with this event and sell the 10,000 books in just two months," she said. "This promotion is important to us because we are a part of the community and we want to give back what they have given to us."
