Alumni Association recognizes top grads

The Alumni Association recently honored the top two fall graduates in each of the six colleges at the annual Winter Academic Excellence Dinner in the International Room of the International Trade and Technology Building.

The UTPA Alumni Association recently honored the top graduates for winter 2000 commencement. From left are Selvi Sudanthi; Angela Stewart; Dr. Dan Dearth, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences interim dean; Margarita I. Ayala; Caprica A. Neil, Ingrid Devilliers; Dr. Rodolfo Arevalo, Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Wallace Tucker, College of Arts and Humanities assistant dean; Veronica Estrada; Claudia Patricia Aguirre; Dr. John Villarreal, College of Science and Engineering assistant dean; Rosendo Garcia III; Dr. Helen Castillo, College of Health Sciences and Human Services dean; Wendy Kalter Gillum; Deborah Lynn Bickerton; Dr. Hilda Medrano, College of Education dean; and Zoe Michelle Caceres.

Honored in the College of Arts and Humanities were Ingrid Devilliers and Margarita I. Ayala, while Selvi Sudanthi and Oralia A. Carriaga were recognized in the College of Business Administration.

Deborah Lynn Bickerton and Zoe Michelle Caceres were recognized in the College of Education, and Wendy Kalter Gillum and Claudia Patricia Aguirre of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services received awards.

Awards for the College of Science and Engineering went to Rosendo Garcia III and Veronica Estrada, and Angela Stewart and Caprica A. Neal in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences also were honored.

UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez and Vice President for External Affairs Roland S. Arriola were in attendance, along with the deans of each college. As part of the dinner, each graduate gave a brief biography and future goals.

"This is probably one of the most meaningful events the Alumni Association hosts throughout the year," said Phyllis Hutchins, Association director. "You get to meet these students, and you become a part of their lives and their dreams. That's what makes the University come alive."
