UTPA mariachi takes top prize in competition

The University of Texas-Pan American Mariachi placed first at the sixth annual Mariachi Vargas Conference and Competition recently in San Antonio.

UTPA took top honors in the University/College Division, while Texas A&M International University in Laredo placed second and Southwest Texas State University and the San Antonio Independent School District All-District Mariachi tied for third.

Other participants included The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas at Brownsville, The University of Texas at San Antonio, the University of Houston, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Laredo Community College and Palo Alto College in San Antonio.

Following the contest, UTPA opened for Mariachi Vargas in an evening concert at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium.

The UTPA Mariachi will perform concerts Jan. 19 and 20 and 7 p.m. and Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Fine Arts Auditorium.
