Dr. Avraham Shama, new dean of the College of Business Administration at The University of Texas-Pan American, will be the luncheon speaker Nov. 1 at the monthly Faculty Forum sponsored by the UTPA Alumni Association at the Tower Club in McAllen.
Shama will discuss "For Dot.Coms, It's the Vision Thing." It will expand on an article he recently published in Barron's financial magazine that concluded most Internet companies will fail because they lack business savvy.
Before joining UTPA in July, Shama was the Rutledge Professor of Management in the Robert O. Anderson Schools of Management at the University of New Mexico. His UNM group studied 136 randomly selected Internet companies that had recently gone public.
What the researchers found, Shama reports, is that only 12 of these were showing a profit.
"Dot.coms have been failing because they regard sales revenues and profits as distractions," said Shama, noting those that will succeed learn to couple technical know-how with business savvy.
The Faculty Forums, which feature prominent UTPA faculty members sharing their expertise and research, are presented the first Wednesday of most months at the Tower Club, 200 S. 10th St., and are open to the public. Tickets for the noon events are $12.50 a person and include lunch. Call 956/381-2500 for reservations.
