Relief is coming for users of the temporary parking lot just north of The University of Texas-Pan American.
The empty dirt lot, which can accommodate about 200 vehicles, is adjacent to a paved lot on the southwest corner of Schunior and Sugar roads. It has provided much needed overflow parking. Unfortunately, the lot becomes impenetrable in inclement weather.
The relief - in the form of a new, 500 vehicle lot at the northeast corner of Schunior and Sugar - is expected to be ready Dec. 15.
"We're doing what we can to accommodate students, staff and faculty," said James Langabeer, vice president for Business Affairs. "I've been asked why we don't just pave the dirt lot. The answer is because that's where the new Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) will be constructed, so it would be a waste of more than $100,000 for a temporary fix."
Additional relief will come with the completion of the Computer Center and Math/General Classroom building next spring. Construction of the two, adjoining buildings temporarily closed about 40 spaces, but the University compensated by creating a new lot just east of Jody Ramsey Stadium, said Marvin Boland, director of facilities planning and construction at UTPA.
