EDINBURG - More than 100 state and national foundation representatives gathered Friday, June 16 at The University of Texas-Pan American Annex for the third annual Funders' Forum.
"The (Funders') Forum is a great way for foundations to learn about the unique history of the Valley and its funding needs..." said Mimi Minkoff, administrative and grants manager and trustee of the Swalm Foundation. "I had the opportunity to meet and visit with representatives from a variety of agencies in the Valley to learn about their programs."
The forum was a premier event showcasing state and national foundations and corporations. Panelists made presentations on their respective organizations' programs, guidelines and areas of interest for the coming funding year.
"The 1999 Funders' Forum gave me the opportunity to meet and network with representatives from various foundations and corporations," said Lisa Farias, executive director for the Rio Grande Valley Teach for America.
This year's participants include The Meadows Foundation, Houston Endowment, Inc., The Fannie Mae Foundation, The Hogg Foundation, RGK Foundation, Swalm Foundation, the Levi Strauss Foundation, Kenedy Memorial Foundation and the Estill Foundation.
Irene Sanchez-Casas, director of the UTPA Southwest Nonprofit Resource Center, said the event was an excellent opportunity for local nonprofits to meet face-to-face with high-profile foundations.
"As nonprofits become more knowledgeable and proficient in making their needs known to foundations, the foundations will become more knowledgeable of the needs of this community," Casas said.
