EDINBURG - High school seniors who plan on majoring in the health or allied health fields are encouraged to participate in a special Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) offered at The University of Texas-Pan American.

The Pre-Freshman Summer Bridge Program, scheduled for July 12 through Aug. 23, is designed to increase the number of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in the health professions. The deadline for applying is April 1.

According to Joan Reed, associate director of special programs at the College of Health Sciences and Human Services, 30 graduating high school seniors will be selected to participate in an intensive six-week session of academic enrichment courses and labs taught by UTPA faculty and staff.

Students will attend classes and labs in chemistry, anatomy and physiology, mathematics, writing, and study skills. Students also will receive a daily stipend of $40 for each day of attendance.

The program is sponsored by a grant from the Division of Disadvantaged Assistance, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
