The Department of Music at The University of Texas-Pan American will host its first alumni reunion at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Fine Arts Courtyard.
"Not only is this a good time to meet with old friends and re-establish old ties, it's an opportunity for me as the new department chair to connect with the community, especially our graduates who are band and choir directors in the area," said Dr. Dahlia Guerra, chair of the Department of Music at UTPA. "I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and to visiting with some of the local musicians and teachers."
The reunion party for alumni and their families will include a barbecue dinner, ice cream sundaes, games and contests, and musical performances by a brass ensemble, a jazz combo and the award-winning UTPA Mariachi.
Organizers of the event are Guerra; Ciro Trevino, band director at Edinburg High School; Susan Swindle Edmonson, music teacher in the Edinburg schools; Edgar Fuentes, band director at PSJA High School; Ruben Adame, band director at La Joya High School; Kerri Krska Adame, music teacher in the La Joya schools; Norma Cardenas, string teacher in the Edinburg schools; Ruth Crews, assistant professor of music at UTPA; Yvonne Anderson, arts patron and wife of the late Department of Music chair, Dr. John Anderson; and Alice Hawley, director of alumni relations at UTPA.
The reunion party is sponsored by the Department of Music and the UTPA Alumni Association. There will be a $5 per person charge for the dinner. For reservations, please call 956/381-2500 by Wednesday, Sept. 15.
