EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American Library is accepting nominations through Aug. 29 for the fifth annual "Notable Valley Hispanics" exhibit, which will coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
According to George Gause, UT Pan American's Special Collections Librarian, nomination guidelines require that the nominee be living and of Hispanic origin and must have been born in the Rio Grande Valley or now living in the Valley.
Persons nominated should generally be involved in either civic and/or humanitarian activities and be considered a community leader. Candidates should also have conducted significant work or activity in the Valley. Persons who have previously been named Notable Valley Hispanics should not be renominated.
Selected as "Notable Valley Hispanic" in 1998 were Dr. Maria C. Alen, Efrain Flores Jr., Ramon Garcia, Minerva "Minnie" Gomez, Macaria de la Garza Gorena, Roger R. Heredia, Wilfredo "Willie" Lopez, Nick Molina, Miguel Nevarez, R.P. "Bob" Sanchez, Arturo D. Torres, and Benito Trevino Jr.
Those honored in 1997 were Joe Cardenas, Abel Fernandez, Maria Gomez, Gilbert J. Gonzales, Enrique Guerra, Roberto Gutierrez, Noe Hinojosa Jr., Amelia Molina, Anabella Ramos, Sam Saldiviar, Dr. Santiago "Jimmy" Silva and Dr. Carmen Tafolla.
Those honored in 1996 were Micaela Alvarez, Elena Farias Barrera, Yolanda de la Garza Barrera, Ruben R. Cardenas Leticia Hinojosa, Evy Ledesma, Berta Guerra Longoria, Benjamin Ivan Longoria-Valadez, Dr. Guillermina Lozano, Francisca "Paquita" Perez de Lozano, Joe Ochoa, Joe Antonio Perez, Alfonso Ramirez, Jesus E. In conjunction with the 1999 exhibit, the UT Pan American Friends of the Library will sponsor a Notable Valley Hispanic program at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, in the Media Theater, adjacent to the University Library.
