MCALLEN -Minority business owners from across the Rio Grande Valley will gather in McAllen Thursday (May 13) for a little business enlightenment.

More than 300 small minority business owners, along with 33 state and federal agencies, are expected to attend the 1999 McAllen Business Exposition to be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the McAllen Tourist Center, 1300 S. 10th St..

The exhibit is free to the public and pre-registration is not necessary.

"This gathering of state and federal agencies along with the small minority business owners of the Rio Grande Valley was designed to provide an easy access between the two," said Robert Cantu, UTPA purchasing development coordinator. "This event will enable the small business owners to establish contacts with the agencies and get a better understanding of the requirements necessary to gain contracts."

According to Cantu, the business owners will have the opportunity to obtain detailed information on contracting opportunities with the State of Texas, customer service strategies, electronic commerce and marketing information, as well as grant and loan programs for all small businesses.

A multimedia Internet demonstration will also be provided during training sessions, as well as networking opportunities with local and state purchasing agents who will be available to answer questions about contracting throughout the afternoon at the exhibit. Contract opportunities will be available for bidding at the exhibit.

The exhibit is sponsored by The University of Texas-Pan American, the General Services Commission and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.
