EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American Women's Empowerment Business Center will celebrate its grand opening April 7 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the UTPA Annex, 2412 S. Closner in Edinburg.

The new center, which is UTPA's Office of Center Operations and Community Services (CoSERVE) newest addition, is designed to assist women entrepreneurs throughout South Texas.

"Our goal is to provide the highest quality business technical assistance to women-owned start-up and existing business in the four-county Rio Grande Valley area," said Roland Arriola, executive director of CoSERVE.

The center, which has been operational since October, was made possible through a $600,000 five-year grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Women's Business Ownership.

According to Candi Roxas, director of the Women's Empowerment Business Center, the clients will have access to business counseling and assistance in English or Spanish in the areas of finance, marketing, management, computer applications, and loan applications and packaging.

"The number of women entrepreneurs has grown steadily over the past 20 years," Roxas said. "Hopefully we will be able to assist the growing need women entrepreneurs have here in the Rio Grande Valley."

Arriola said the center is one of only three women business center in Texas and one of 35 throughout the nation.

"This program was three years in the making," Arriola said. "It's a real honor to be selected for funding and to be able to offer these kind of services to the people of the Rio Grande Valley."

Within the next five years, the center is scheduled to hold some 826 orientation sessions, 300 training sessions and 30 networking sessions.
