EDINBURG - Dr. Francis J. Brewerton, professor of management in the College of Business Administration at The University of Texas-Pan American, will be taking a trip down under as part of an International Rotary Group Study Exchange Program with Australia.
Brewerton and Cynthia Gutierrez, a physical education teacher at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in McAllen, were selected by the Rotary District 5930 to spend five weeks in Perth, Western Australia.
The two will be joined by three Rotary Club representatives from the Laredo area to make up the South Texas exchange team, which will leave for Australia Feb. 20.
"Through these type of programs, we are hoping to promote the ideas of peace, goodwill and understanding," Brewerton said. "We will be spending a little over a month living and experiencing the western Australian culture."
Brewerton, who will also serve as team leader for the group, said the program will allow members an opportunity to observe their vocations as practiced in another country.
"This will impact their careers by allowing members to exchange ideas," he said. "These experiences will promote an appreciation of cultural diversity and spread the mission of fellowship."
Each team member will stay with a host family three to six days at a time while traveling through Western Australia. While in Australia, there team members will give several presentations on their careers and lifestyle in South Texas.
"The idea is to take a slice of South Texas life to Australia," Brewerton said. "We are hoping to give them a good idea how we live and our way of life while, at the same time, an Australian team will be doing the same thing back in South Texas."
Brewerton said, while in Australia, he will also be collecting data for a study comparing business methods in Australian, the U.S. and Mexico.
