UTPA hosting 5th Annual Student Math Conference

EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American will host the 5th Annual Student Conference on Mathematics and its Applications Friday (Feb. 5) in the Engineering Building, Room 1.300.

The conference will begin at 8:15 a.m. and include mathematical presentations from undergraduate students from UTPA, Laredo Community College, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and the University of Houston, Downtown.

"These students will be discussing mathematical topics on which they have been conducting extensive research," said Dr. Miguel Paredes, associate professor of mathematics at UTPA. "This conference will also be giving the students the opportunity to compare their work with students from other colleges and universities throughout South Texas."

Presentations will include Math Lab Assistant's Work in a College Algebra Teaching Project, Bacteria Sampling of Waters in and around Laredo, A design to Measure the Realism of Some Computer Games, Women in Mathematics, Math Puzzles and Games, La Place Transform Solution to the Coupled Oscillator, The Surface Area of a Doughnut from Three Points of View, Sierra Blanca, A Comparison of the Periods of the Linear and Non-Linear Pendulum, and A Problem in Number Theory.
