EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American Friends of the Library, in conjunction with the National Library Week Committee, are sponsoring a photo contest in an attempt to capture the spirit of the nation's libraries for National Library Week.

Winning entries will be exhibited April 11-17 at the University Library.

Amateur photographers are encouraged to share their vision of libraries by entering the "Beyond Words: Celebrating America's Libraries" photo contest and help mark the Library of Congress bicentennial.

The UTPA Friends of the Library are offering prizes of gift certificate from the University Bookstore. First place is $100, second place $75 and third place $50.

Deadline for entries is March 26, the winners will be honored at a program during National Library Week. Winning entries will be forwarded to the national photo contest sponsored by the Library of Congress and the American Library Association.

Each photographer is limited to two entries and will be judged on three criteria how well the photograph illustrates the "Beyond Words: Celebrating America's Libraries" theme, artistic merit and technical quality.

Prints may be black and white or color and must be mounted 8x10 or 5x7 and have been taken since Jan. 1, 1998. No composite photos, multiple prints, double exposures, montages or "sandwiches" of more than one photograph are allowed. Digitally taken photos are acceptable, but prints must be provided.

Each photo must have a completed entry form taped to the back and be accompanied by appropriate release forms signed by the photographer and subject(s). Photographers must be able to furnish original slides and negatives if requested by the American Library Association, including slides of digitally taken photographs.

All entries for national judging may be used by the American Library Association for any and all purposes, including advertising and promotion in support of libraries and literacy. Entries that are forwarded to the national contest will not be returned.
