The University of Texas System's Texas-Mexico Border Diabetes Registry Project and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service will host a Diabetes Management Symposium for health care personnel Feb. 8 and 9 at the South Padre Island Convention Center.
The symposium, titled "Strategies for Health Care Personnel," is designed to help health care professionals and paraprofessionals become aware of the latest research findings on diabetes; develop strategies and skills in helping clients with diabetes-related conditions; become aware of existing curricula, programs and resources for educating people with diabetes; and encourage networking and enhance health care of persons with diabetes.
The keynote address on Monday, Feb. 8, delivered by Dr. Paul Villas, director of the UT System Texas-Mexico Border Health Coordination Office, will be on "Diabetes in South Texas." The program that evening will be on "Cooking Light: Ethnic Foods for the Person with Diabetes," by the Rio Grande Valley Chef's Association with facilitator Dr. Maria Alen, M.D., chairman of the board of the Texas Department of Health/Texas Diabetes Council.
General sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 9, will be "Obesity and Diabetes in Youth: Clinical Characterization and Correlations" and "Cultural Factors Affecting Diabetes."
Other topics to be addressed in smaller, concurrent sessions include weight control, acanthosis nigricans, the UT System's Texas-Mexico Border Health Coordination Office's Diabetes Registry Project, diabetes in youth, nutrition, oral care, foot and eye care, the cost of health care for diabetes, educational resources to educate persons with diabetes, alternative medicine and the complications of diabetes and how to prevent them.
Registration is $75 in advance and $100 at the symposium. The sponsors have applied for Continuing Education Credits for the conference.
