EDINBURG - The University of Texas-Pan American students and faculty are taking on the role of Santa Claus this year, offering low-income children a brighter Christmas through the UTPA Adopt an Angel Program.

"The UTPA Adopt an Angel Program was started four years ago in an effort to help low-income students purchase gifts for their children," said Frank Zaleta, UTPA student government president. "The need for charity here in the Rio Grande Valley is high, especially around the Christmas holidays."

The Adopt an Angel Program is sponsored by the UTPA Student Government Association, who develops a wish list from low-income students which is then shared with donors.

"We usually get requests for toys and especially clothing," said Zaleta. "There seems to be more of a need for clothing than anything else."

The UTPA Adopt an Angel Program assists approximately 30 families every year. Gifts will be distributed on Dec. 19, from noon to 2 p.m. along with a Christmas meal at the UTPA Cafeteria. Deadline for donations is Dec. 15.
