Jan. 14 application deadline for UTPA general scholarships

Sudents wishing to apply for general scholarships to The University of Texas-Pan American for Fall 1999 have until Jan. 14 to file their paperwork.

Scholarship applications and the 1999-2000 Scholarship Guide are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Financial Aid Office in Room 186 of the Student Services Building or from high school counselors.

"Students may also be eligible for departmental scholarships at the university," said Michelle Alvarado, scholarship coordinator at UTPA. "They should check with individual departments for information. The deadlines vary, but the applications are usually due in January or February."

Alvarado said scholarship applicants also can use the FundFinder database available at the Financial Aid Office. Internet resources like FastWEB (at are also recommended to help with the scholarship search. Some students also be eligible for UTPA's new University Scholars Program, through which entering freshmen from Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy and Starr counties who have earned college credit through Advanced Placement examinations and/or through the Concurrent Enrollment programs at UT Pan American may qualify for a four-year tuition and fees Distinguished Achievement Scholarship and the special designation of University Scholar.

"Of our scholarships, this is the only one for which students do not have to apply," said Bud Frankenberger, special assistant to the president at UT Pan American. "They earn it by their performance in college-level work while in high school." To be eligible, students must complete, while still in high school, 12 hours of Advanced Placement credit, Concurrent Enrollment credit or a combination of the two (from four separate exams or courses ) with at least a "B" average; or complete six hours of AP or CE credit (from two separate exams or courses ) with at least a "B" average and have an ACT composite score of 24 - at least 19 English and 19 Math - or an SAT composite score of 1110 - at least 500 Verbal and 500 Math.

Students must be entering freshmen who meet the criteria for regular admission, are eligible for Texas "resident tuition" and have graduated from a high school in the four counties of the Rio Grande Valley - Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy - or from a private school or home school in the same area. Only an Entering Freshman Application for Admission to UT Pan American is required; however, candidates are encouraged to attach a separate letter to their applications identifying themselves as candidates for the University Scholars Distinguished Achievement Scholarship and briefly explaining how becoming a University Scholar fits into their future career and educational goals.
