EDINBURG - In observance of World AIDS Day 1998, The University of Texas-Pan American is hosting a panel discussion on HIV and AIDS from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 1 at the University Center Ballroom.

Panel members will include individuals living with AIDS, physicians specializing in infectious diseases, and caregivers and activists who work with persons who are HIV-positive.

According to Daniel Garcia, World AIDS Day chair for BACCHUS & GAMMA Peer Educators at UTPA, this year's theme, "Force For Change: World AIDS Campaign With Youth," is tied to the fact that worldwide five people between the ages of 10 and 24 are infected with HIV every minute.

State Rep. Kino Flores (D-Mission) will be on hand to speak about state legislation and attitudes concerning HIV-positive individuals. UTPA Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Rodolfo Arevalo will receive a proclamation on behalf of the university from Edinburg Mayor Joe Ochoa, and Martha Benavidez of KGBT-TV will moderate the event.

The discussion is being sponsored by the UTPA BACCHUS & GAMMA Peer Educators student organization and Comfort House Services Inc.
