In an effort to be ready for the year 2000, The University of Texas-Pan American is upgrading its computerized Student Information System Oct. 8 to Nov. 1.
"We are making sure all computer programs that were purchased and developed will be in compliance with the year 2000," said David Zuniga, director of the Office of Admissions and Records. "In order to accomplish this, the institution needs to have a time period to make sure the system will be upgraded and tested."
The period of Oct. 8 to Nov. 1 was chosen because the Student Information System usage is relatively low at that time.
During the three week "down period," some student information functions will be delayed and some offices will be limited as to services that can be provided. Zuniga said the offices have made arrangements to minimize inconvenience for students.
The Office of Admissions and Records will experience delays in updating student records and issuing transcripts. A 24-hour turnaround period will be needed to provide transcripts.
Also, the Financial Aid Office will have similar delays in updating and processing financial aid and scholarship information.
The beginning of telephone registration for the Spring 1999 semester will be delayed until the end of the upgrade period.
Year 2000 compliance is an organized effort to ensure that all computer programs will continue working on and after Jan. 1, 2000.
"Anyone who works with a computer needs to make sure that they will be able to use it when the year 2000 begins," Zuniga said.
