Gary Gallup has announced his resignation as athletic director at The University of Texas-Pan American, effective Oct. 31, to become assistant executive director of the Golden Gloves Association of America.
Concurrently with Gallup's resignation, Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez, president of UT Pan American, has asked Vice President for Business Affairs James R. Langabeer to assume administrative oversight of the intercollegiate athletic program and to serve as interim athletic director until a new AD is hired.
"Since we will be searching for a new athletic director, I feel this is a good time to review our options and identify new opportunities in regard to intercollegiate athletics at UT Pan American," said President Nevárez.
"The Legislature has, in essence, placed all Division I schools on notice that they are accountable to their boards of regents and to their students. We have to be able to prove to our constituents, especially our students, that we can operate an exciting and entertaining intercollegiate sports program in a fiscally responsible way," added Nevárez.
"That is why I have asked our chief business officer, Jim Langabeer, to assume day-to-day responsibility for the athletic program."
Langabeer said a nationwide search for a new athletic director will be initiated immediately.
In the interim, Langabeer said he will assign some of the day-to-day management of the Department of Athletics to various members of the Division of Business Affairs staff.
"We have several important issues to investigate and analyze in the coming months in regard to intercollegiate athletics at UT Pan American," said Langabeer, "and I have asked Mr. Gallup to assist me with some of those matters until he is ready to go to his new assignment with Golden Gloves."
