Dr. Kichoon Yang, a program director at the National Science Foundation, became chair of the Department of Mathematics beginning Sept. 1.
Yang, who received his PhD in mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis and a bachelor's in math from the University of North Carolina, was a faculty member at Arkansas State University from 1982 to 1994.
Since 1994, he has been director of the Geometric Analysis Program in NSF's Division of Mathematical Sciences. In 1996, he was a fellow of the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science and Technology, conducting a study of Japanese government science funding.
Yang is on the executive committee of the Korean-American Mathematical Scientists Association and the editorial board of the Korean-American Science and Technology News.
