Memo to: Faculty, Staff and Students; From: Charles A. Sober, Interim President; June 4, 2009CDC and UTPA Travel to Mexico Advisory Removed

The University of Texas-Pan American administration continues to monitor developments of the current Swine Flu Influenza outbreak. The Crisis Management Team is coordinating efforts with the State of Texas and the Hidalgo Health Department on a daily basis.

The Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Travel Health Warning recommending against non-essential travel to Mexico, in effect since April 27, 2009, has now been downgraded to a Travel Health Precaution for Mexico.

This decision comes following careful CDC monitoring of the H1N1 flu outbreak in Mexico and a determination that the disease is not as severe as originally thought.

UTPA will follow the CDC's new recommendation clearing the way for trips to Mexico. Please plan your business travel accordingly.

Be aware, the CDC continues to recommend that travelers visiting Mexico take steps to protect themselves from getting novel H1N1 flu. To learn more about these recommendations go online at http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/content/travel-health-precaution/novel-h1n1-flu-mexico.aspx
