The UTPA Departments of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS) and Student Health Services (SHS), in conjunction with local and state health departments are closely monitoring the current nationwide Swine Flu Public Health Emergency. Officials are reporting 20 U.S. Cases of swine flu in five states so far. Texas currently has two confirmed and one suspected case. To date the Rio Grande Valley has not been affected.
In order to control this outbreak the World Health Organization is urging you to please refrain from coming to work or school, limit your contact with other people, and contact your health care provider immediately if you exhibit the following flu-related symptoms: fever, respiratory congestion, cough, runny nose, lethargy, body aches, and in some cases, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Students who do not have private insurance can obtain medical help from UTPA Student Health Services.
The Texas Department of State Health Services has the following recommendations you can take to stay healthy.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs.
The density of UTPA community increases the likelihood of transmitting infections and dictates conservative actions in response to this possible epidemic. Additionally the Rio Grande Valley community will be seeking the help of many of the professionals at our institution in the event that a “pandemic” does materialize.
We will keep you updated on additional steps to take should the need arise.
Thank you for your attention to this very important matter. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call DEHS at 956/381-3690 or SHS at 381-2511.
