Students Building Their own Web Site Questions

Question: What basic steps are involved in making a web site?
Answer: In order to make a web site you first will need a host. (i.e. locally, UTPA Servers, or a free online host). The second step would be to come up with a good design and idea for the purpose of the site. After you have decided on design and purpose you need to translate your ideas into an actual document. You can use a variety of HTML editors or a plain text editor. Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage are among the most popular of HTML editors. After that, in order to view your pages, you must upload your files to your host.


Question: What web sites offer free tutorials on web site creation?
Answer: There are numerous web sites that offer free tutorials and resources on web site design. Some of the most popular include:


Question: Where do I put the web site once I create it?
Answer: Once the site is created you must upload your files to a host (i.e. locally, UTPA Servers, or a free online host) in order to allow others to see your work.


Question: What does FTP mean?
Answer: The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a software standard for transferring computer files between computers with widely different operating systems.


Question: Where can I get an FTP client?
Answer: A common FTP Client can be found at the university Help Desk.


Question: What type of content can I submit on my web site?
Answer: The type of content you wish to submit is entirely up to you, but keep in mind that it will be put through some sort of screening process. The content that you submit should not be, under any circumstances, offensive or profane in nature.


Question: Will my web site have to go through some sort of screening process?
Answer: Yes. All university web sites will be put through some sort of screening process. This screening process is necessary in order to make sure that the published content adheres to university guidelines and regulations.


Question: Does I.S. make faculty/staff/student web sites?
Answer: Yes and No. Internet Services cannot create or update personal faculty/staff/student web sites. However we can create and/or update department web sites. However, we will be more than happy to answer any of your web development questions. Any questions can be sent to webhelp@utpa.edu.


Question: Where is my faculty/staff/student web site located?
Answer: Once your site has been created, whether you created it or Internet Services created it, it will be placed in a directory within a UTPA web server. Once this directory has been created you will receive an email from Internet Services which will include the URL where you can access your web site.
