Answers to FAQ's

Departmental Web Site Questions

Question: My department needs a web site. How do I get started?
Answer: If your department needs a web site please visit our web site request section.

Question: What paperwork is required for my department web site?
Answer: In order for us to streamline the creation or updating of your web site please visit our web site request section.  It details that there are no forms to fill out, just an email to webhelp@utpa.edu and please copy your department head on the request.

Question: What are the basic steps involved to creating a departmental web site?
Answer: Internet Services will schedule a meeting with you to review your web site requirements. We will coordinate with Computer Systems Staff to grant you permission to access your web folder on the web server.  We will help you map the directory of your web site to your computer, so that you can access it via a drive letter.  We will keep you updated via email or telephone on the progress of the web site.  Once the web site design and development have been completed by us, the requesting department is responsible for maintaining the content on their site.  We will show you how to edit content using a HTML editor.

Question: What HTML editors are available?
Answer: There a number of common HTML editors out there. Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage are among the most popular. UTPA Departments can purchase these from the University Bookstore.

Question: How do I map the remote folder to my computer?
Answer: In order to be able to map a remote folder you must first have permission to access the folder. Once your permissions have been set, you can open up My Computer and select Tools on the toolbar. You then select the option to Map Network Drive. You must specify the name of the server and the shared folder that you are trying to access. Example: \\server\share.  Internet Services can assist you in mapping your web folder.

Question: Does Internet Services offer classes on HTML editing?
Answer: Internet Services does not offer classes on learning HTML. The Information Technology Service Desk offers training to faculty and staff throughout the year on HTML and many more topics.
