A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Dr. Brown joined the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Public Health (UTSPH) in 2002. Since joining UTSPH, he has applied his training in health economics to public health issues. These include the economic problems associated with chronic illnesses. For instance, he has shown that for Mexican Americans with diabetes, labor productivity declines greatly. He has also shown that several public health interventions, such as those aimed at curbing childhood obesity, are cost-effective. Finally, he has examined many issues in the area of health insurance. For example, he has examined reasons for low insurance rates among Mexican Americans in border and non-border areas of the U.S. He has also examined tax incentive strategies to encourage the introduction of long-term health insurance contracts. Dr. Brown came to UTSPH after four years at the School of Economics at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
