Rio Grande Valley Health Survey
Encuesta de Salud del Valle del Río Grande   Español

General description of the study

This is a pilot study to determine the feasibility of using a telephone interview to collect data on women's health and patterns of health care utilization in the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas. Specifically, the study seeks to interview female residents of Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy counties who are between 19 and 55 years of age. This population has one of the highest uninsurance rates in the country. More than forty percent of the residents of these counties lack insurance. Since this community is located at the border between Texas and Mexico, one of the focuses of the study is to study the determinants of cross border utilization of health care services.

This study is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development through a seed grant from the Initiative in Population Research at The Ohio State University. The study is being coordinated by researchers at The Ohio State University and The University of Texas-Pan American. Interviews are conducted in Spanish or English, depending on the preference of the respondents. Contact telephone numbers are available to respondents if they have questions.
