Educator Day Breakout Session Presenter
Monday, September 24, 2012
TARGET AUDIENCE
The majority of attendees will consist of 8th grade level teachers in the areas of science and mathematics.
FOCUSPresenters should help attendees understand what science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is and how they can help their respective students make the connection between their middle school courses and long-term careers in STEM. Presenters can discuss the different types of occupations available within their respective organization, whether it be a corporation, federal agency or educational institution. If the presenter has a STEM-related career, he or she is encouraged to share how they got to their position in an effort to provide teachers with information on different professions that they can take back to their classroom to help their students “see the possibilities” available to them. Presenters can also share what kinds of qualities/values (e.g.--leadership and teamwork) are sought for in certain careers and how teachers can help their students develop their full potential and become well-rounded individuals.
We will consider call for proposals focusing on different subjects but would like to encourage presenters to gear their presentations towards the physical sciences (chemistry and physics) as this area has been identified as a desired area of improvement for our students in South Texas by our local school districts.
STRUCTUREIn addition, breakout sessions should be structured in a way where the presenter(s) can guide participants in hands-on activities or insightful discussions about resources they can use to further their STEM teachings in the classroom. Presenters are encouraged to use handouts and audio-visual aids and actively engage participants. Each breakout session will be 90 minutes long and presented twice.
