Student PC - Windows XP
First of all, verify that your PC meets the following system requirements:
- Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.
- Must have the latest device drivers for your Wireless Network Adapter installed.
NOTE: Check the list of some of tested WLAN cards that will work with the UTPA wireless network if your PC does not have a built-in WLAN adapter (There are other WLAN cards that may work but have not been tested).
Wireless Setup Instructions:
1. Click on Start.
2. Click on Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
4. Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties.
5. Click on the Add button.

If the Student network is already listed under the Preferred Networks:,
6. In the Student Properties window,

Click on the Association tab

Enter "student" in the Network Name (SSID) field.

Select "Open" on the Network Authentication drop-down list.

Select "WEP" from the Data encryption drop-down list.
- Verify that the box for "The key is provided for me automatically" is checked.
7. Click on the Authentication tab.

Verify that the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network box is checked.

Select "Protected EAP (PEAP)" from the EAP type drop-down list.

The "Authenticate as computer..." and "Authenticate as guest..." boxes should be unchecked.
- Click on the Properties button.
8. In the Protected EAP Properties window,

- Uncheck the Validate server certificate box.
- Click on the Configure... button.
9. In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window,

10. Click OK in the Protected EAP Properties window.
11. Click OK in the Wireless network properties window.
12. Click OK in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.
13. In a few seconds a balloon will pop up above your wireless connection icon on the bottom right corner of your desktop (See picture below).

- Click on the yellow balloon, "Wireless Network Connection", to enter your credentials.
14. After you click on the balloon, the Enter Credentials window will appear on your desktop.

15. After a few seconds, a message stating that you are connected will appear on the bottom right of corner of your desktop.
16. Open your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, etc.). You will now be able to access the Internet.
- Your username and password will be saved on your PC.
- It should not ask you for your username and password again.
- Your PC will connect you to the UTPA wireless network automatically whenever you are on campus.
