I come from a single- parent household and will be the first in my family to receive a bachelor’s degree. I have two children who keep me busy when I’m not at school. My daughter Ashley is 7, and my son Ashton is 3. I started my education at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen, and then transferred to UTPA in 2006.
I always knew that I could make that “A” and would not settle for anything less.
I think the best advice I can give is to work hard, don’t procrastinate, and take the time to enjoy their college experience.
UTPA has opened up the door of opportunity for me. This university has prepared me to enter the real world with the skills necessary to be successful not only in a career but in life as well.
My biggest inspiration and the reason to better myself are my children. As a child, I experienced what it was like to wear hand-me-down clothes and wonder where my next meal was coming from. I came back to school so that my children will never have to experience that.
My plan is to work full time at a pediatric rehab in my hometown of Harlingen. After a few years of working and gaining knowledge in my profession, I want to return to graduate school to receive my master’s in communication disorders and practice as a certified speech-language pathologist.
I think it will be a cross between fear and accomplishment.
The classes were challenging, the campus was beautiful, and the great friendships that I have gained over the last two years have made my college experience one to remember.
