Tell us a little about your background?

I grew up in the Valley with my wonderful, loving, hard-working and supportive parents, Daniel and Linda Ibáñez. I have a younger sister, Veronica, who currently attends UTPA, and is majoring in psychology with a minor in political science. I am a musician (trumpet, vocals), peace advocate, and social justice advocate.

What motivated you to be a good student?

A desire to make my parents proud, dispel intellectual stereotypes about women and minorities, and prove my capabilities to myself all motivated me to be a good student.

What is the best advice you have for current and future UTPA students?

Stay focused, and never let anyone make you feel you are incapable of accomplishing something. Operating with honesty, integrity, and respect for others is the only way to guarantee success. Do not be afraid to voice your opinion, especially if it seems unorthodox – this is the only way positive change occurs.

How did UTPA make a difference in your life?

My education at UTPA has made me a stronger and more confident individual. It has made me more aware of the vast immeasurable social issues that exist in today’s world. I have been able to frame and strengthen my own ideological beliefs while, at the same time, remaining open and tolerant of others’ views and opinions.

Who or what inspires you to succeed not only in your education, but in life too?

My parents are the most inspirational and admirable people I will ever know. My mother inspires me through her strength and integrity, while my father inspires me through his intelligence and compassion. Also, I wish to thank Drs. Freeman, Mounce, Wrinkle and Wenzel (Department of Political Science), and Prof. Bustamante, Drs. Himmel, Raajpoot and Liebowitz (Department of Sociology), who have inspired me through their diverse knowledge, insight, and instruction.

What are your plans for the future (jobs, travel, etc.) now that you have graduated?

This fall, I will be attending graduate school at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, as I have been admitted to their political science Ph.D. program. I intend to focus on foreign policy, international relations, and international human rights. Ultimately, I would like to become a professor and focus my work/research on the socioeconomic and political systems in developing nations. Peace advocacy and human rights advocacy will play an essential role in my work.

How will you feel when you walk across the stage to receive your diploma?

Relieved, that is, if I can make it across the stage without falling down or something.

What made your time at UTPA happy and successful?

The interesting array of diverse faculty, staff, and fellow students all contributed to my happiness and success at UTPA. I am especially grateful for the lifelong friendships I developed while participating in student organizations. I would not trade my time at UTPA for anything in the world; it has been the most enriching and enlightening experience of my life.
