Ruben A. Perez, Healthcare Entrepreneur
After graduating from Pan American University, Ruben A. Perez (BBA 77) moved to Houston where he landed his first job as a financial auditor in the health care industry. Today, Ruben is on the Board of Directors for one of the largest hospice and homecare providers in Texas.
The oldest of six children born to migrant parents in Donna, Texas, Ruben developed an impressive resume as an entrepreneur over his 35 years in the health care industry, which included joining other investors in 1988 creating Columbia Hospital Corporation, serving as Senior Vice President- Finance. The company began with two hospitals in El Paso, Texas and by 1992 was traded on the NYSE and had assets exceeding $1.0 billion. Eventually Columbia merged with Hospital Corporation of America to become the largest health care provider in the nation with over 340 hospitals in the U.S. and Europe.
In 1992, Ruben left Columbia and formed AmHealth Corporation, a hyperbaric medicine and kidney dialysis company, with his brothers Daniel and David. In 1996, AmHealth merged with STAT Healthcare, a NASDAQ traded company, later that year it merged with American Medical Response, the nationÕs largest ambulance company. In early 1997, Laidlaw Corporation acquired the ambulance company in a $1.2 billion transaction. In 2001, Ruben and his brothers, formed Inter America Wound Centers, a hyperbaric and wound care company, and in 2006, they formed CIMA Healthcare, a leading hospice company in Texas.
In October 2011, CIMA Healthcare merged with Jordan Health Services and together employ more than 10,000 employees in Texas. Today, Ruben serves on the Board of Directors of the combined companies as well as Managing Partner of Cumbre Partners, LLC, a private investment company.
Ruben is married to Blanca, also from Donna. They have a son, Michael, and a daughter, Megan. They live in Boerne, Texas.
