A professional in the field of Finance, Joe Brown has a long experience in banking and has dedicated his services to Border Capital Bank, McAllen, Texas since June, 2005. As CEO, Brown is responsible for the overall management of the bank and serves on its Board of Directors and the Board of the bank’s holding company, Border Capital Group.
After 4 years of active duty with the United States Coast Guard, Brown’s career in banking started at Merchants Marine Bank, Port Isabel, Texas, where he was first hired as a teller. He later worked as loan teller, vault teller and posted the bank’s general ledger. Brown later worked at the Island Bank, South Padre Island; First National Bank, Edinburg; Security State Bank, Pharr; and Texas State Bank, McAllen. As a result, he gained skills in various areas of the bank including operations, branch administration and lending.
Brown served for 30 years with the United States Coast Guard; 4 years of active duty and 26 years in the reserve. Brown retired with the rank of Commander in July 1999. While with the US Coast Guard, he served at various units around the country, including Captains of the Port, Marine Safety Offices, Search and Rescue Stations and the ships USCGC Papaw and USCGC Durable. He gained skills and expertise in facility and ship inspection, pollution investigation, search and rescue, aids to navigation and law enforcement. Brown commanded US Coast Guard Reserve Units at South Padre Island, Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Texas; and, Albuquerque, NM.
Additionally, Brown has served as a softball umpire for over 18 years with the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) where he has achieved the level of “Elite Umpire”. He usually officiates in well over 250 games each year, including local leagues, state and national tournaments. He has officiated in 26 National Championships, include 5 Armed Forces Championships. Brown is also a member of the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) where he serves as a state softball clinician and officiates at high school and college games. Despite all of the above, Brown still makes time to provide for the community. Brown was the 2009-2010 McAllen Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman and currently serves on the McAllen Economic Development Corporation Board, and the Texas Bankers Association Foundation Board. Brown has served on the boards the Museum of South Texas History (Chairman), Edinburg; the Pharr Rotary Club (President); McAllen South Rotary Club; and the Pharr Chamber of Commerce. He is an honorary member of the Reynosa 76 Rotary Club and a 3 time Paul Harris Fellow. He has been selected as citizen of the year for Pharr, Texas and man of the year for McAllen, Texas. He attended South Carolina Baptist University, the Citadel and Pan American University, Brownsville, Texas. He holds an AA degree from Texas Southmost College and a BBA from the University of Texas-Pan American. He is also a graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University, Dallas. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, he now resides in McAllen with his wife of 40 years Dora Brown. They have one daughter Jamie-Lynne, a graduate of Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos and the University of Texas, Austin where she is currently employed and enrolled in a doctoral program.
