Community Festival @ Jardín Del Arte

Join us for this fun community event, which will be the culmination of a week of cultural and educational exchange! The afternoon and evening features an amazing list of family-friendly events including a variety of musical performances, children's activity tents, book displays, South Texas Literacy book distributions, children's play and storytellers in the Edinburg City Auditorium, local and international artists, author presentations and book signings, and a variety of art and food vendors.

WAGS

Stop by, pick a dog and a book, and read to the dog! WAGS (Wonderful Animals Giving Support) is a nonprofit that has been in the valley for almost 8 years. This is part of their program called Wagging For Words.

Mariachi Competition and Concert
Saturday, March 23

More than 600 students from all over the state will face off during the Middle School and High School Mariachi Competition. The culmination of this festive event is an evening concert featuring the world-famous Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernandez, UTPA Mariachi Aztlán, and the winners of the middle school and high school competition. The event is open to the public. An exciting new addition this year is the performance of the UTPA Symphony Orchestra with Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernandez, directed by internationally acclaimed conductor, Alondra de la Parra!

Santitos: International Printmaking Portfolio Exhibit

The exhibit features thirty four printmakers from more than eight countries interpreting the theme of Santitos, a popular and worldwide form of devotional image. Organized by Professor Reynaldo Santiago.

"Funambulo de la Noche"

An exhibit of thirty-six prints by Sergio Hernandez, one of Mexico's leading artists from Oaxaca. Sponsored by the Mexican Consulate.

"Photographic Exhibit: "El andar del teatro en español en una mirada"

Exhibition of photography of performances presented in Spanish language by the Theatrical Group "Frontera Líquida" from 2007-2012, UTPA and beyond.

Film Competition
All Week, March 18-24

McAllen Film Commission Clip Competition for UTPA Communication Students

Presented by the Department of Communication and the McAllen Film Commission, this competition presents an opportunity for students to earn scholarships by submitting shots/scenes of the Rio Grande Valley. The McAllen Film Commission will provide a list of locations and shots that must be included with each submission. Teams will be allowed to include other locations/shots. Prize money will be offered by the McAllen Film Commission as scholarships to attend the UTPA Department of Communication. See the FESTIBA 2013 website for contest rules and criteria.

Pan American String Festival A Day with Alondra
Sunday, March 24



Featuring internationally recognized conductor, Alondra de la Parra.
Students from the UTPA Music Program and high schools in South Texas will study orchestral repertoire, technique and musicianship with internationally recognized conductor Alondra de la Parra and UTPA faculty, including violinist and the Marialice Shivers Endowed Chair in Fine Arts Dr. Daniel Andai, violist Dr. Joel Pagan, cellist Dr. Tido Jansen, and bassist Dr. George Amorin. The workshop and concert will feature music by Mozart and Saint Saenz, including a performance of "The Carnival of the Animals" by UTPA duo pianists Shoko and Brendan Kinsella with the Pan American Faculty Chamber Orchestra (PAFCO) and the UTPA Contemporary Dance Ensemble. Students will perform in the Pan American Festival Orchestra (PAFO).

All rehearsals, concerts and panel discussions are free and open to the public.
