"Language Access in Healthcare: A photovoice exploration of Spanish signs in healthcare organizations in the Rio Grande Valley" Student Panel and Film Screening
This panel presents an analysis of the presence of the Spanish language on public signs in hospitals, clinics and doctor's offices in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Seventy five undergraduate students participated in the project by taking photographs of signs in over 50 healthcare organizations in Hidalgo County. In their research, students also reflected critically on the photographs and found that signs designed to promote health were often absent in Spanish and that signs dealing with payments and with organizational rules were often present in Spanish. Students also found that Spanish signs were more prone to spelling and grammatical errors than English signs and concluded that there is much room for improvement in the provision of language access for Spanish-speaking patients in the Rio Grande Valley's health delivery system. The results of their research will be presented in this panel discussion.
