ANTH 1353 INTRODUCTION TO FOLKLORE

General introduction into the field of folklore data including collection, preservation analysis and interpretation according to the main social science theories of folklore. Emphasis on folk music, narrative, drama, art, medicine and material culture.  Credit may not be received for both ANTH 1353 and SOC 2353. (Formerly ANTH 2353; may not be repeated for credit.)

Course Objectives:

1. The major objective of this course is to provide a solid cross cultural foundation for folklore studies. To achieve this goal we will review the basic terminology and concepts of folklore studies in a cross cultural context.

2. A second goal of the course is to achieve a better understanding of US and Valley folklore by reviewing different genres (types) of folklore.

3. Finally the course will try to achieve an understanding of folklore data, and to collect folklore materials.
