Admission Requirements

The English Language Institute's requirements for enrollment are:

  • You must be 17 years of age and older (8 and older for Summer II)
  • Have completed high school or the equivalent in their country.


General Registration Information
Students should apply to the English Language Institute office at least one month before the program starts (see Calendar). International students should read the Student Visa, I-20 section for further information.
The following need to be brought in or mailed to register in the ELI:

  • Completed Program Application for Admission
  • Current bank statement of person who will be responsible for your studies (for student visa)
  • Full tuition is required with the application
  • Checks or money orders must be drawn on a U.S. bank. Do not mail cash.

Registration Procedures

  1. Register at English Language Institute (Lamar Building Rm. #1) or send a completed application by mail to the address listed in the contact information page.
    Registration Hours: Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  2. Pay the tuition in full.
  3. Student Visa: The I-20 Form will be provided to eligible students. Eligibility Requirements: A current bank statement from the person responsible for your expenses in needed at the time of the registration. A bank statement must cover tuition, books, housing and insurance.
  4. The Department of Homeland Security requires all foreign students to pay a fee of $200(US) either by mail or via internet, and fill out a I-901 Form before making an appointment at their corresponding American Consulate.
  5. Insurance: The ELI requires foreign students to buy medical insurance to cover U.S. medical costs. Medical insurance must cover all of the following: 1) Major medical $50,000 (US) 2) Medical evacuation $10,000 (US), and 3) Reparation of remains $7,000 (US). The UT system exempts students from Mexico from the insurance requirements.
  6. Students should register 30 days prior to the first day of class.

Refund Policy
Refunds will be given only before the starting date of the program. The $100 application processing fee and any late charges are non-refundable. Refunds require 4-6 weeks to process. Only applicants who cannot be placed in existing levels will be given a full refund.

Late Registration
A late fee of $50 (US) will be required for applications received after the registration deadline.

Student Visa, I-20 Form 
International students who wish to study at the ELI must apply for a student visa before leaving their country. The English Language Institute is authorized to issue the Certificate of Eligibility-I-20 Form needed to obtain an F-1 student visa for English study. This form will only be issued after an application for admission and tuition have been received and the ELI has verified that all requirements have been fulfilled.

Students may pick up the I-20 form in the ELI office or request that it be sent by registered mail. Students must take the Certificate of Eligibility, I-20 Form, two photos, the bank statement and a valid passport to their corresponding American Embassy or Consulate in their home country before entering the United States. We recommend that the student call their American Consulate to ask if they need further documentation.

English Placement Test
Students accepted into the English Language Institute will take an English placement test, write a short essay, and have an oral interview. Specially trained instructors will determine students' level of proficiency and place them into the appropriate level. Students are placed in a class with other students of the same ability. Seven levels of English are available, ranging from Basic to High Advanced.

Instructors

The ELI has highly experienced instructors possessing:

  • Native English language proficiency
  • Knowledge of a second language
  • Bachelor or Master's degrees in teaching English or related field
  • 3 to 20 years experience teaching ESL in the U.S. and abroad

Health Insurance
The University requires all international students to purchase US health insurance to cover US health care costs. The University Student Health Insurance is required unless the student submits proof of other equivalent insurance with their Application for Admission.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial Aid and Scholarships are not available to ELI students.
