Dana Shackelford is a dancer, choreographer and
educator and is currently an Associate Professor of Dance in the
UTPA Dance Program. She holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in
Dance from Texas Woman's University and a Master of Fine Arts in
Dance from Arizona State University. Her career in teaching dance
began in the public high schools of El Paso, Texas where she also
was a principal dancer, choreographer and teacher with El Paso
Contemporary Dance Theatre. Dancing in EPCDT provided Dana with
many opportunities to perform lead roles in the works of such
choreographers as Bill Evans, Wade Madsen, Nancy Cranbourne and Joan
Laage. She also served as project director and coordinator of the
El Paso Dancers Workshop in the summers of 1994 and 1995. Dana's
performance experience also includes several summer concerts with
Interweave Dance Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, the San Francisco's
Women's Work concert in 2000 and roles in works by Wally Cardona and
Melissa Rolnick. Dana’s choreographic work has been performed here
at UTPA, in three American College Dance Festivals, on students at
the Arizona School of Ballet, and in several adjudicated concerts at
Arizona State University.
Dana enjoys sharing her passion for Dance with
students through her teaching of Modern and Ballet technique
classes, as well as Dance Science, Dance History, Theory of Dance
and Dance Appreciation. Serving as one of the three Co-artistic
Directors of the UTPA Dance Ensemble, she continues her creative
endeavors by setting new works on the Ensemble dancers. Her work
explores and strives to stimulate a deep kinesthetic response in
both participant and observer.
