Dr. Pedro Martinez is serving his
eighth year on the music faculty and his
fifth year
as the Department Chair of the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Texas-Pan American.
He holds
a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Minnesota,
a Master of Music degree from New Mexico State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from New Mexico State University. His musical training on trombone includes tutelage under Dr. William Clark, Dr. Ronald Thielman, Professor Tom Ervin, Dr. Allan Kaplan, and Professor Thomas Ashworth.
A current resident of Edinburg, TX, Dr. Martinez was born in El Paso, TX, grew up in Las Cruces, NM, and
previously resided in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. His versatile performing experience includes ten years as a trombonist in the Las Cruces Symphony conducted by the acclaimed Dr. Mariana Gabbi, numerous chamber ensembles appearances in the Southwest and Midwest, solo trombone in the El Paso, TX - based salsa band "Azucar," many appearances with the Minnesota Jazz Orchestra in St. Paul, MN, and solo trombone chair with the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band from Red Wing, MN.
His local performance engagements include
or have included participation as co-principal trombone of the Valley Symphony Orchestra, lead trombone of the Dean Canty Jazz Orchestra,
both based
in Edinburg, TX, lead trombone of the Harbor Lights Jazz Orchestra in Brownsville, TX, and tenor/alto trombone of the Rio Grande Valley Trombone Quartet, the South Texas Trombone Ensemble,
and the UTPA Faculty Brass Quintet.
