The EVAWD Project will assist area domestic violence and disability rights organizations to recognize and address the needs of WWDs who are at risk of, or have experienced, violence, sexual abuse, or stalking. Cross-training, education, outreach, and collaboration will be used in order to address the areas that have been identified from needs specific of this geographic location. The population to be served will be women with disabilities, predominantly Hispanic/Latina, who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking.Photo of a young woman leaning against a brick wall.           FCC is a non-profit, domestic violence/sexual assault organization providing needed services to predominantly Hispanic/Latina women. VAIL, a local agency serving individuals with disabilities, is the area independent living center and, as such, another key partner. VAIL will provide educational trainings and technical assistance related to compliance with disability related legislation to assist in identifying barriers to service accessibility.
In order to address these areas, the Department of Rehabilitation at UTPA will partner with FCC and VAIL to provide education and technical assistance to a variety of service providers including independent living centers, faith-based organizations, and day treatment centers. The EVAWD Project will specifically:

  1. develop culturally appropriate (in English and Spanish) training materials,

  2. increase awareness through education and training,

  3. develop referral services,

  4. expand community outreach services, and

  5. provide individual technical assistance/consultations to community agencies, organizations, and other interested parties.

As a result of the EVAWD Project, an increase in services and awareness related to domestic violence, sexual abuse, and stalking affecting WWD in the LRGV will occur. The Project is committed to ensuring victim safety, full access to services, and holding perpetrators accountable for their criminal actions.
